Impact of Dehydration on Cognitive Performance
Recommended Hydration Strategies:
To maintain peak mental performance during long poker sessions, consider the following hydration strategies:
Pre-Session Hydration: Begin hydrating well before your session starts. Consuming water consistently throughout the day ensures you’re not starting in a dehydrated state.
Regular Fluid Intake: Aim to drink approximately 8 ounces (about 240 milliliters) of water every hour during your session. Setting a timer can serve as a helpful reminder to take regular sips.
Incorporate Electrolytes: For sessions extending beyond a few hours, consider beverages that replenish electrolytes, such as sports drinks or coconut water. Electrolytes like sodium and potassium are vital for maintaining fluid balance and supporting cognitive function.
Monitor Caffeine Consumption: While moderate caffeine intake can enhance alertness, it’s essential to balance it with adequate water consumption, as caffeine can have diuretic effects.
Recognize Hydration Cues: Pay attention to signs of dehydration, such as thirst, dry mouth, headaches, or reduced urine output. Proactively addressing these cues can prevent cognitive decline associated with dehydration.
Conclusion
Staying adequately hydrated is a simple yet effective strategy to maintain cognitive sharpness and enhance decision-making abilities during prolonged poker sessions. By implementing regular hydration practices and being mindful of fluid intake, you can support sustained mental performance and gain a competitive edge at the table.

I just finished up the WSOP Circuit Main Event where I cashed for $3600! I was in a really interesting hand where UTG limped off a 4 big blind stack (red flags!) and I was in the BB with 920 and I checked my option. The flop was 9c8c3s. It was super obvious to me that he had a high pair, don’t you think?
But I had to put him all-in with his 3 big blind stack on this board. He snap called and turned over KK. What do you think about this hand? Do you ever check/fold flop? If so, tell me why!
It ended up being a great time at Graton. This casino is only a short drive to Napa Valley (I love wine!) so I took a day off to head to the wineries with some friends and of course #MoreBob!
Taking a couple of weeks off the tournament grind until WSOPc in Vegas at the Horseshoe! Let me know if you’re coming down!
