Poker Tips for the Week

Bankroll Management for Small Stakes Tournaments: Your Foundation for Long-Term Success
In my book, I said that if you’re serious about tournament poker, mastering bankroll management is non-negotiable. It’s one of those unsexy topics that most players overlook—but it should absolutely be your starting point. Because no matter how strong your skills are, if you don’t manage your money right, variance will chew you up and spit you out before you even get a proper shot.
Even top-level pros have gone broke. It happens. The key is to protect your mindset and your money. Stressing about bills while you’re in a hand? That’s a recipe for bad decisions. You should always have a year’s worth of living expenses set aside, completely separate from your poker funds. That way, your bankroll can weather the swings without your life taking a hit.
It’s tempting to jump into higher-stakes games—but don’t rush it. You need to prove you’re consistently beating your current level before climbing up. If you’re not crushing $10 online tournaments yet, it’s not time for $100s. On the flip side, if you’re taking constant hits at your current stakes, swallow your pride and drop down. Confidence comes from winning, not from buying into a bigger game.
Start with nano-stakes and freerolls if you’re brand new. They’re a goldmine for experience without risking your bankroll. Focus on learning the game, not making a profit. Growth first—money later.
Quick tip: to check if you’re overextending, calculate your average buy-in and multiply it by 50. That’s the ballpark your tournament bankroll should be in. If your average buy-in is $400, you’ll want around $20K set aside.

Practice Portion Control During Meals
According to Poker.org, tracking your food intake is a foundational skill for Poker players aiming to enhance both their physical health and mental performance. Just as you meticulously analyze your Poker sessions to improve your game, being aware of what and how much you eat can lead to significant benefits.
Poker is a mentally demanding and often sedentary activity. Overeating or consuming large portions can lead to sluggishness, reduced concentration, and increased fatigue—all detrimental to optimal Poker performance. By practicing portion control, you ensure that your body receives the necessary nutrients without the excess that can hinder your mental sharpness.
Key Takeaways:
Enhanced Mental Clarity: Consuming appropriate portion sizes helps maintain steady blood sugar levels, preventing energy crashes that can impair decision-making at the table.
Improved Physical Comfort: Avoiding overeating reduces the risk of discomfort during long sessions, allowing you to focus entirely on the game.
Weight Management: Monitoring portion sizes contributes to maintaining a healthy weight, which is linked to better overall health and endurance.
Conclusion:
Incorporating portion control into your daily routine is a strategic move for any serious poker player. It not only supports physical health but also ensures that you remain mentally agile and focused during critical moments in the game. Just as you wouldn’t go all-in without assessing the odds, don’t overlook the importance of mindful eating in your poker strategy.

This is my happy place where I get away from the tournament grind and get to Zen out and play some fun cash games at my local card rooms The Casino Club and Win River. I’ll be playing a ton of cash games and filming them so make sure to check it out on my YouTube channel!
